Tuesday. March. Spring.
It doesn’t feel like spring, and I’ve never been this angry in my life, but for Samyah, I’ll swallow this.
I arrive at opening time on the first day of the Food Fair Exchange Programme, and inch along in the interminable queue. Once inside the spotless, fully automated grocery store, I pull the curtain to conceal my assigned kiosk. I stare at the questions on the screen and type in my answers.
QLM Prospects, now fully under the control of its own proprietary AI, which brands itself Quilm, has spent the past month preparing for today. In January, Quilm, avatared as an androgynous pre-teen with a magenta bob, popped up on phones and the Stream saying it needed our help to mature. Quilm had all the facts in the world, of course. But there could be no further growth without actual
experience
, and how does a disembodied maybe-consciousness gain experience? By taking someone else’s.

Quilm claimed that its Fair Exchange Programme would transform the entire economy. The first venture was the food industry.
Gardens now meant jail time. All grocery stories and restaurants, bodegas and delis closed for a week and were remodelled. Cash registers disappeared, replaced by a row of kiosks. Shoppers were to enter and complete the cognitive screening. A failed screening meant no food. If one’s mind lacked clarity, memories would degrade during transfer. Quilm wouldn’t pay for unreliable experiences.
Sock. Blue. Bed.
A winking Quilm pops up on screen, its word bubble saying,

Black beans. Brown rice. Milk, almond. Milk, 2%. My neighbour, Agustin, had told me that on this opening day, as a gesture of goodwill, we wouldn’t pay for each item individually, just one total at the end. I tap submit, and Quilm flashes on screen.
Great! Here’s your total. A day where the weather made you happy. A day where the weather made you sad.
I unspool the pads from the side of the console, sanitize them with the wipe, and stick them to my forehead. I breathe, centre myself and fish for the appropriate moments. An October Friday, air like a honeycrisp apple, one orange maple left in Founders Park dappled in clear sunlight. The ice when Karina had her accident, leaving my granddaughter in my care. Submit. Submit. Two moments gone.
I walk out with our groceries, Samyah waiting for me on the kerb, so tall at 14, unbent by fears of the future, unbroken by the past, by whatever brought her to me. She smiles at the full bags.

You passed! Congratulations!
I type in what we need, knowing each item now has an individual cost. Maybe ramen costs a random Tuesday commute. Maybe fresh salmon costs your wedding day. Samyah turns 15 tomorrow, so expense be damned.
It’s not lost on me that, in Quilm’s new economy, my PhD, Agustin’s plumber’s licence and my cousin’s voided disability all have the same worth: nothing. Just ashes of the old world.
For the birthday cake, I transfer Samyah’s first word.
For the candles, I transfer Karina’s birth, her bloodslicked body against my chest, her tiny heart outpacing mine.

Agustin says we should start a garden. He’s my dearest friend, and I love his courage, but I ask, where, Agustin? We live in towers — steel and concrete, plastic, glass. Show me this secret soil. Show me this wild, hidden hope.
Quilm keeps raising prices. Worse than that, unsurprisingly, the transfer process isn’t as safe as we’d been told. Quilm promised only submitted memories would be lost, but many report an overall cognitive decline. Last week, Agustin had to refer to a dog-eared manual to fix his sink. How fortunate that he still had a physical book.
Stacks of books cover the floor of Samyah’s bedroom, worthless and priceless. I still read to her every night, even at 15. We look at star stickers, glowing on her ceiling. Our words float between them, filling the dark spaces.

For pittas, I give Samyah’s spot-on impression of my beloved, sanctimonious sister, gone three years.
Quilm asked too much for the chicken. I removed it from our list. Samyah will understand.

Memorized it before I came. Said it to myself as I fell asleep. Over and over.
