OK SEOUL, March 16 (Yonhap) -- The ruling Democratic Party (DP) is moving to accelerate legislative efforts to pass key bills this week adjusting the role of two agencies that will replace the prosecution service, officials said Monday. The push came after President Lee Jae Myung reportedly raised concerns the previous day over disagreements within the party on the government's prosecution reform plan amid speculation that the passage of the bills could be delayed as some hardline DP lawmakers have called for revisions. "The DP is not ruling out the possibility that the bills to establish the serious crimes investigation agency and the indictment agency may be put to a vote during a plenary session on March 19," senior spokesperson Kang Jun-hyeon said during a press briefing after a meeting of the party's supreme council. SEOUL, March 16 (Yonhap) -- The ruling Democratic Party (DP) is moving to accelerate legislative efforts to pass key bills this week adjusting the role of two agencies that will replace the prosecution service, officials said Monday.
Another DP official also told Yonhap News Agency that the party is considering handling the bills at Thursday's plenary session.
The two agencies are set to be established in October under a government reorganization bill that passed the National Assembly last September. Some DP lawmakers are opposing the government's bill that allows the indictment agency to have the authority to request police to conduct further investigations or carry out its own probe into a case when needed.
During a dinner meeting with first-term DP lawmakers on Sunday, Lee urged them to join him in pushing through his reform agenda and reportedly voiced support for the government's revised draft bill, approved by the Cabinet earlier this month.
The government has pushed for the prosecution service to separate its exclusive authority of both indictment and investigation to address longstanding criticism that such power is too excessive.
