SEOUL, March 25 (Yonhap) -- General Motors (GM) Co. said Wednesday it plans to invest US$600 million in South Korea to upgrade production facilities and strengthen its local unit as the U.S. automaker's global hub for small sport utility vehicles (SUVs).
The investment into GM Korea Co. includes an additional $300 million on top of the $300 million announced in December, reflecting the company's confidence in GM Korea's improving performance and competitiveness, the company said in a press release.
GM Korea and its labor union held a joint event at the company's Bupyeong plant in Incheon, west of Seoul, to mark the investment pledge.
The investment will be used in upgrading production equipment, improving safety infrastructure and working environments, and enhancing operational efficiency, according to the company.

The announcement comes after speculation that GM may reduce or eliminate its South Korean manufacturing footprint amid growing trade uncertainties tied to U.S. tariff policies.
Hector Villarreal, GM Korea president and chief executive officer (CEO), said the investment decision came as a result of the success of the global vehicles developed and manufactured at GM Korea, and key actions taken to transform the operations profitably.
"Since 2018, with the support of our stakeholders, we have taken key actions to strengthen our manufacturing operations to support profitability," Villarreal said.
He stressed that the successes of the Chevrolet Trax, Trailblazer and other models were "building GM Korea's reputation as a global small SUV center of excellence," especially in export markets.
