Under the collaboration, the South Korean carmakers will jointly develop next-generation autonomous driving systems by integrating their software-defined vehicle (SDV) capabilities with Nvidia's Level 2+ self-driving features, Hyundai Motor Group said in a press release.
The group said it will leverage Nvidia's data platforms and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies while systematically integrating accumulated data into a unified learning pipeline.
Through its U.S.-based autonomous vehicle joint venture Motional, the group will also work with Nvidia to further advance Motional's Level 4 robotaxi capabilities.
"The expanded partnership with Nvidia marks an important milestone in realizing Hyundai Motor Group's vision for safe and reliable self-driving technology," said Kim Heung-soo, executive vice president and head of the group's Global Strategy Office.
"Through a unified, groupwide collaboration framework, we will strengthen our technological competitiveness -- from Level 2 and higher autonomous driving systems to Level 4 robotaxi services."
Building on the Nvidia Drive Hyperion platform, the group said it plans to establish an integrated self-driving architecture scalable from Level 2 to Level 4.
Level 2 automated driving systems require drivers to remain fully engaged, continuously monitor the environment and be ready to take control at any time.
A Level 3 vehicle can perform certain driving tasks, such as lane changes, without driver intervention under specific conditions. At Level 4, a vehicle can operate autonomously in limited environments but will not function if required conditions are not met. At Level 5, fully automated vehicles can operate under all conditions without human input.
"The future of mobility will be built on AI and software," said Rishi Dhall, vice president of the automotive business at Nvidia. "We're combining Hyundai Motor Group's leadership in vehicle engineering with Nvidia's accelerated computing and AI to build safe, intelligent, Nvidia Drive-based autonomous driving systems."
