SEOUL, April 8 (Yonhap) -- HD Hyundai Co., South Korea's leading shipbuilding conglomerate, said Wednesday it will offer raw materials and financial support to its small and mid-sized partner companies to help them cope with supply disruptions stemming from ongoing Middle East tensions.
The company has secured key materials, such as ethylene and xylene, through its refinery and petrochemical affiliates and will provide them to partners upon request.
Through HD Hyundai Chemical Co., the company has secured 2,000 tons of ethylene, obtained mainly from cracking naphtha and used in oxy-fuel cutting and welding, while xylene, a source of paints and varnishes, will be supplied through HD Hyundai Oilbank Co.
Financial support will be offered to partner companies in the shipbuilding, construction machinery and power plant equipment sectors in collaboration with government-led funds.
"As external uncertainties grow, the burden on our suppliers inevitably increases," said an official from HD Hyundai. "We will support our suppliers so they can continue their production activities stably by proactively securing key raw materials and providing financial assistance."
The move comes as South Korea has been striving to secure supplies of naphtha and other petrochemical materials amid prolonged tensions in the Middle East.
The government last month began restricting naphtha exports to help stabilize domestic supply, while also banning the hoarding of petrochemical materials used in the production of plastics and packaging.
