SEOUL, April 9 (Yonhap) -- HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., South Korea's leading shipbuilder, said Thursday it has completed construction of two ammonia-fueled vessels, marking a first for the global shipbuilding industry.
The two mid-sized, ammonia dual-fuel gas carriers are scheduled for delivery by July to Belgium-based shipping company Exmar and its affiliate, Exmar LPG France, the company said in a press release.
The share of ammonia as a marine fuel is projected to rise to 8 percent by 2030 and 46 percent by 2050, according to the International Energy Agency's (IEA) carbon neutrality road map.
HD Hyundai Heavy said it has secured orders for a total of eight ammonia-fueled vessels from Exmar and multinational commodity trading firm Trafigura.
The company, which previously delivered the world's first methanol-fueled petrochemical product carrier in 2016 and a methanol-fueled container carrier in 2023, said it aims to strengthen its leadership in the eco-friendly shipbuilding market.
