SEOUL, April 1 (Yonhap) -- The government said Wednesday it is raising its resource security crisis warning by a notch to Level 3 over a possible crude oil supply crisis, as the country is beginning to see physical disruptions in oil supplies.
The alert will be elevated to the second-highest level, or orange, in the country's four-tier national resource security crisis warning system at midnight, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources.
The decision was made as disruptions in domestic oil supplies are materializing a month into the Iran war and as global oil prices are continuing to show excessive volatility, the ministry said.
The last oil tanker to pass through the Strait of Hormuz before its effective closure on March 1 arrived in South Korea on March 20, and imports of crude oil through the strait have been suspended for more than 10 days since, it noted.
South Korea had issued the lowest warning, Level 1, early last month and raised the alert to Level 2 on March 18.
With the second-highest warning in place, the government will strengthen its supply and demand control measures for oil by beefing up efforts to secure alternative supplies through oil routes other than the Strait of Hormuz and implementing a crude oil swap system between the government and private companies.
The government will also strengthen management of supply chains of naphtha and petrochemical products widely used across various industries, while continuing stern responses to unfair market practices involving fuel products, according to the ministry
The ministry said it is also raising the national resource security crisis alert for natural gas by a notch to Level 2, despite sufficient supplies to last throughout this year, considering that volatility in global prices could put upward pressure on domestic utility rates.
