Expert Commentary

The AI Now Institute's appointments are a significant development in the field of AI research. While the new Board members and visiting fellows bring diverse expertise and a timely focus on pressing societal concerns, the institute must navigate potential conflicts of interest and ensure transparency and accountability in its research efforts. As AI continues to shape the world, it is essential to prioritize rigorous research that addresses the complexities and risks associated with this technology. The AI Now Institute's work has the potential to make a significant contribution to this effort, but it must be done with caution and a commitment to the highest standards of scholarship.

Recommendations

  • Establish clear guidelines for conflict of interest management to ensure the objectivity of the research.
  • Implement a robust system for monitoring and evaluating the research efforts of visiting fellows and advisors.
